About Bitcoin

No conversation about cryptocurrency or blockchain technology is complete without reference to Bitcoin. In fact, it is the world’s first cryptocurrency and still the number one in terms of market capitalization. Unlike government-issued currencies, Bitcoin operates on a decentralized authority that enables a new payment system with its own completely digital currency (BTC). Its creator describes Bitcoin as a peer-to-peer version of electronic cash that seamlessly facilitates online payments across the globe, without needing to go through a financial institution.

Bitcoin is stored and exchanged on a secure online digital ledger known as a blockchain. As of 2009, the price of Bitcoin was roughly 1 BTC = $0.0009. At its peak in 2017, Bitcoin was selling for as much as $20,000. Bitcoin’s price is hardly ever fixed and is mostly dependent on the last transaction conducted on a specific exchange.
